Dont worry Bradley...the truth is that OA is really sitting in the broom cupboard pretending to be an astronaut doing his countdown....best thing is not to disturb him and he will return to normal quite soon I feel....lol

Well, i've tried to go to the new bits (all look very nice, i'll say that) 3 times and each time i've lasted about 2 minutes until the site has cut my internet connection (information overload, I presume).

Would be nice if I could see a list of videos without being forced to download/watch one by default, or just pop to the home page to see any news without being forced to download lots of music and a slideshow every time.

I think i'll just be sticking to the forum.

You can always navigate to the News page from the navigation bar on the forum and skip the home page entirely.

Anyway, thank you for your comments and we'll see if we can make some changes for people with slower connections.

PS: Is the gallery quick or slow loading for you?

The gallery is all good/fine (like the way it works too, mate).

Sorry to moan, but as (I think) 71% of homes (which is presumably where most people will visit OA) have slow connections me thinks a large potential audience will be alienated. If I go to a site that has music and video the moment I get there I usually get irritated (or disconnected) very quickly whilst it's all trying to download and I go somewhere else. I appreciate it all has to look good, but it doesn't have to be NASA mission control.

If one person leaves before s/he's looked around because there's music, or a slideshow, or a video, getting in the way of him having a scoot around the site then that's 1 person too many (and 1 person who would have otherwise stayed). A site is judged on its content IMO, and not it's technical wizadry (in the same way that i'd stop reading a book if it started playing tunes at me every time I turned the page).

Hope this is taken in the constructive way it is intended.

It's the other way around according to this...

However, you've got a good point, we don't want to alienate any non-broadband visitors. So we'll definitely take your comments into account.

Yep, 69% of net users. IE computers. IE the vast majority housed in offices. I believe I specifically used the term "homes". Anyway, i'm very important and at present represent 100% of your customer feedback.

We could mute the music by default and use the sound button for turning it on. Also, we could try to simplify the opening animation. Would that be 100% better, 50% better, 0% better?

PS: A lot of people access this site from their place of work.

I've been trying that with every page that OA has thrown at me. He's done the bulk of the work and I'm just a crash test dummy.

Don't get me wrong, it looks FANTASTIC. I just don't understand why everything has to be so, erm, "complicated".

I appreciate I might be in the minority, but if 1 person gets cut off who would have not done so yesterday, that's a bad thing IMO, and flashy stuff won't get any more people through the door as people don't know what it's like until they get there.

Simple 2 questions.

a) Have you ever been to a great website and ever said: "wow, that's great - I wish there was some music, though"?

b) Have you ever gone to a non-musician's website and got naffed off with any music?

If the answer to the first question is yes, and the second question no, i'll shut up.

I think i'll shut up anyway. I dunno - live in a nice house that the broadband suppliers won't touch with a bargepole and you're an outcast these days.

PS. My home IS my place of work.

It's a great job OA & team

Running at 2.2GHz (AMD 3500+), the only problem I notice is when scrolling down a forum page (slightly slower? - could be imagining). The overall content doesn't seem to be much higher (hardly registering on a download bit-meter).

I guess there might be more rendering going on in our browsers; that could be catching some people out if they have an aging graphics card in their PC. Newer source compilers use newer optimisation features built into hardware but, for PCs that don't have the features, things can slow down to a grind

Thanks for the work, all - it's as HOT as ****

Having been a self-appointed prophet of doom, it is only fair to report that everything is working fine for me. It's not noticeably slower (at least not on a broadband connection), but it is noticeably better looking.

Personally, I am not a big fan of videos and music that automatically load. Rather than having a stop button, I prefer a start button. Music doesn't add much to my surfing experience. In fact, I find it irritating if I'm playing my own music through the PC's media player.

I have just been testing out the gallery in Firefox and noticed that you only have to click the Flash applets once. My version of Internet Explorer requires you to double click on any control the first time you use it, which can get pretty irritating as it's not always clear whether a single or a double-click is required.

It's Firefox for me in future when I visit OA.

well it seems fine on speed for me, but I'm on broadband. It seems nice and tidied up, but one thing that might be nice is maybe a post (maybe on the Home page) to explain what exactly is new. Being not very bright on the computer, I cant see anything new, just a much neater and tidier website.
